In 1683 Dutch naturalist Maria Sibylla Merian published T he Caterpillar, Marvelous Transformation and Strange Floral Food [Der Raupen wunderbare Verwandlung/ und sonderbare Blumennahrung], which depicted insects in their colorful natural habitats, versus insects as specimens in sterile landscapes. Her work gave us an understanding of the then-revolutionary idea of the metamorphosis life cycle, while her detailed and romantic illustration style was soon imitated other artists including a certain male ornithologist.
