Frequently Asked Questions
Once dyed and color is set, all yarn is rinsed thoroughly in a mild lavender wool wash until water runs clear. Superwash yarn is machine washable and the dyes used are colorfast and washfast, but washing separately in cold water and drying flat when possible ensures your beloved handiwork stays vibrant and soft for years. Untreated (Nonsuperwash) should be hand washed in cool water to prevent felting.
Bold colors such as intense reds and blues are at extra risk for bleeding - please take care when considering projects and always use cool water to prevent color bleed.
Crafting has been a therapeutic resource for me and for many in the community. I began dyeing yarn, ultimately, because I couldn’t afford indie dyed yarn more than one skein at a time and believe that everyone should be able to find joy in indie dyed yarn. I've never selected hand dyed yarn before. What do I need to know?
Small batch dyeing creates unique skeins within standardized colorways: though each colorway is replicated using the same process, hand dyeing creates skeins that are truly unique. For best color results, it is recommended to work with yarn from one dye batch. You may want to alternate skeins during larger projects.
Extra care is taken when photographing the yarn as it appears in real life by using professional lighting and camera, however, screens and displays may interpret colors differently.
I am unable to swatch every color batch and every base, but include a sock yarn swatch in crochet and knit from a previous dye batch when possible.
In efforts to reduce waste, water and dye are conserved and reused, I bicycle most orders to the post office, I use recycled or re-purposed mailers, or recyclable cardboard. Yarn wraps and labels are made of 100% recycled paper and printed regionally or in studio. Much of the dye studio equipment is secondhand or repurposed materials.
None of your yarn comes from any source that practices mulesing. Beginning 2022, I am thrilled to add a curated selection of US grown/processed, NC-milled bases to further reduce carbon footprints and sustain regional economies.
Ex Libris Fibers is a city neighborhood "low car" operation and largely conducted by bicycle when possible. The studio is in walking/biking distance and I almost always bike your orders to the USPS.
