Frequently Asked Questions

Care instructions

Once dyed and color is set, all yarn is rinsed thoroughly in a mild lavender wool wash. Superwash yarn is machine washable and the dyes used are colorfast and washfast, but washing separately in cold water and drying flat when possible ensures your beloved handiwork stays vibrant and soft for years.

Bold colors such as intense reds and blues are at extra risk for bleeding upon first rinse - please take care when considering projects and always use cool water to prevent color bleed.

Sliding Scale

Crafting has been a therapeutic resource for me and for many in the community. I began dyeing yarn, ultimately, because I couldn’t afford indie dyed yarn more than one skein at a time. If you’re in a similar spot, the below codes will apply discounts at checkout for any quantity of yarn.

I've never selected hand dyed yarn before! What do I need to know?

Small batch dyeing creates unique skeins within standardized colorways: though each colorway is replicated using the same process, hand dyeing is a rather nebulous, water-based process. You may want to alternate skeins during yarn-guzzling projects. For best color results, it is recommended to work with yarn from one dye batch.

Extra care is taken when photographing the yarn as it appears in real life by using professional lighting and camera, however, screens and displays may interpret colors differently.

New photos are taken for every new batch of yarn - so the batch you see on the screen is the batch you will receive yarn from. I am unable to swatch every batch and every base, but include a swatch from a previous dye batch when possible.

I'm allergic to cats, can I use Ex Libris Fibers?

Studio space is totally cat-free, but cats live upstairs where photos and yarn packaging occurs - please take heed if allergies are a factor.

Sustainability practices

In efforts to reduce waste, water and dye are conserved and reused, the company car is my trusty bicycle (or my intrepid snow boots) and yarn is shipped in 100% recycled mailers with recycled labels, clean re-purposed mailers, or recyclable cardboard.

None of your yarn comes from any source that practices mulesing, and much of it comes from a mill that is OEKO-TEX certified, driven partially by solar power, and that is constantly working to improve the surrounding community and environment. In spring 2022 Ex Libris was thrilled to add a curated selection of US produced & milled bases to further reduce carbon footprints and sustain regional economies.

Yarn labels are made of 100% recycled paper and printed regionally. Much of the dye studio equipment is secondhand or repurposed materials.

Shipping for Preorders (Yarn Club, Dyed to Order) and Ready to Ship

Shipped orders containing both Preorders (Dyed to Order) and Ready to Ship skeins will ship later to accommodate the time necessary to create your skeins. See item listing for exact shipping time details!

Any Ready to Ship skeins needed earlier must be placed as a separate order to ensure 5 business day turnaround on those skeins.

There are multiple skeins in the listing photo. How many will I receive?

If you need multiple skeins for a project, please use the quantity function to select the appropriate number of skeins for your project before purchasing. Multiple skeins are photographed together to give you a broad impression of each varied dye batch.

You will receive as many skeins as you select and purchase from the quantity function, which reflects real-time inventory.

What about collaborations/yarn support/wholesale?

Ex Libris Fibers prioritize partnering with brick and mortar local yarn shops, specialty shops, and developing collaborative projects with small businesses that align with the values and aesthetics that drive my work.

Currently Ex Libris Fibers welcomes collaborations for trunk shows and wholesale as well as opportunities to feature Ex Libris Fibers in any pattern you're designing. If you’re interested in learning more, please reach out to rita@exlibrisfibers.com
