Octavia Butler wrote Kindred in 1979 after hearing a fellow student blame elders for systemic issues. Best classified as speculative fiction, the novel combines time travel, historical fiction, and elements of fantasy to weave a "what if" examination of the generational impact of slavery in America.
Banned in numerous school districts in Missouri, Florida and Wisconsin in recent years, many of those in the American prison system are also barred from enjoying the book due to its "racial content" and out of fear that the historical content within would "disrupt the social order."
$1 from each skein of Indelible series will be donated to the American Library Association's Unite Against Book Bans coalition.
