Dutch naturalist and illustrator Maria Sibylla Merian was absolutely haunted by her research of insects and their life cycles during a time when such things could have a woman labeled a witch. Often kept up late at night waiting for moths and butterflies emerge from cocoons, she was not swayed by societal expectations. This haunting dusky blue is reminiscent of those magical wings in moonlight after metamorphosis.
