Dutch illustrator and naturalist Maria Sibylla Merian left an unhappy marriage in 1685, mother and two daughters in tow, to join a commune of Labadists in Waltha Castle. She researched natural history objects and eventually reasoned that her unhappy marriage was no longer valid in the eyes of God. After the death of her mother at Waltha, she returned to cosmopolitan Amsterdam to further her research, setting sail for Suriname in 1699 in search of new insects and plants to research.
