Illustrator and naturalist Maria Sibylla Merian began collecting insects and obsessively studying them while a young girl in the 1650s. She later went on to illustrate numerous works detailing her observations of the life cycles of caterpillars and other insects during a time when the leading knowledge was that insects could be derived from spontaneous generation recipes. Her research and illustration, at a time when women were generally dissuaded from such work, led us to our understanding of the metamorphosis process.
