Maria Sibylla Merian described (and illustrated) an earth-colored spider eating a hummingbird in Suriname in her 1705 work Metamorphosis Insectorum Surinamensium. She was mocked for it by the "experts" of the next century plus. In the 1860s a male naturalist confirmed that such a spider does exist during his studies in the Amazon, and Merian's research was finally accepted.
