Petrosinella, early literary version recorded by Giambattista Basile
Never intended for children, this “flippant, mindlessly violent” version preceded Rapunzel, recorded by Basile in the 1600s. An ogress captures a pregnant woman for stealing parsley, an aphrodisiac, and curious tower love ensues. In later Rapunzel versions, the tower princess’s pregnancy is censored to construct a moral.
