Before Cinderella, this Chinese tale blended themes also found in Norse and Egyptian mythology of a daughter being protected by supernatural protection by a dead mother, along a golden slipper element that may be familiar. Darker versions do not end at the marriage of Ye Xian, but tell of stepsisters seeking revenge on Ye Xian.
