Fitcher’s Bird, literary form transcribed by the Brothers Grimm
One of many tales told to the Grimms by Friederike Mannel and Henritte Dorothea Wild, this tale’s captured/rescued sister motif (with both more and less bloody horror) is also found in in Norwegian, Scottish, and Italian tales. Though often framed as a moral tale upholding patriarchy and dissuading female disobedience, consider the bravery in the female protagonist challenging male power structures.
